For all of us, our perception of ourselves as a complete person is connected to music in one way or another. But our sound preferences have changed significantly when we consider the last 100 years. So how have musical tastes changed and why is this the case? Let’s try to answer these questions together.

1920-e
The 1920s of the 20th century can safely be called the time of country music. No less popular are folk and opera. But such a close in the 1910s march many bored. The thing is that after the First World War, people wanted to listen to something alive and hopeful. By the way, the popularity of country music can easily be explained by the rise of American influence on the world stage. By the way, there were those who listened to gospel or danced to the sound of rhythmic tango.

1930-е
Popular genres of music in the 1930s were country, tango, jazz, folk and chanson. It is worth noting that with the advent of chanson, the country direction began to gradually lose its position.

1940-е
In the 40th decade of the 20th century, people had no time for music, because the war intervened in their lives. But despite the difficulties, jazz finally managed to displace country music, taking the leading position. With the outbreak of war, people’s musical tastes transformed – they had to remember ragtime.

1950-е
The 1950s were a time of hope and recovery. For this reason, people prioritized music genres in a new way. Country music was again in first place. A new trend, rhythm and blues, came in second place. Next on the honorary ladder was jazz and its subgenre of bipop.

1960-е
Great times with big names like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and The Doors. Rock and rock and roll is what people of that generation needed. Genres like pop rock, R&B, and chanson are at the forefront.

1970-е
In the 70s, pop rock enters people’s music life, but rock ‘n’ roll leaves its ground. Funk and classic rock appeared. It is worth noting that country music is reborn during this period.

1980-е
Disco explodes into the music life of the planet, overthrowing everything in its path. A time of change is how you can call the 80s. Pop-rock and techno-rock were no less popular at this time. And the new wave is another discovery of the 80s.

1990-е
Popular music of the sensational 90s was house, techno-pop, and Eurodance. People were literally overwhelmed by the electronic wave of sound. The reason for this is the emergence of the first sequencer programs for writing music. The 90s saw the birth of another rock genre, punk.

2000-е
2000s did not change much the taste preferences of the population. Punk rock moved up from number five to number three and country rock came back.

2010-е
The 10th years of the 21st century are the time of rap music. Stars like Eminem and Snoop Dogg shine brightly on the arena of world music. Techno is in second place in terms of taste, followed by the same punk rock.

2020-е
The musical mood hasn’t changed much in the 2020s. Rap, techno, R&B, punk and alternative rock are still popular.
All of these trends are united by the general mood in the music market after the transition of music from physical carriers to the Internet and streaming services. People used to buy CDs, leaf through booklets, and flick through the contents of gift editions with awe; now they subscribe to streaming, essentially purchasing access to files with music, and listen to it from their phones, in most cases in the background. Albums are still accompanied by cover art, but music lovers hardly ever see them: according to our analysts, users are much more likely to listen not to specific artists, but to music in playlists tied to moods, activities or current events. Therefore, in order to create a noticeable visual image today, the artist will have to perform some more “leaps in flight”: invest in multimedia and epatage, make richer and brighter clips so that they go viral, thus creating more reasons to look at the music.
So let us summarize. Times change, the music stays with us always! But at the same time, people’s tastes are transformed and adjusted to the trends of the decade. In any case, good music allows us to better understand ourselves and the trends of the time. Let’s see what kind of preferences will be formed in the future… In any case, it will be something new, modern and progressive! Be on the same page with music, no matter what time it is!
